New and Noteworthy – August 2010
In Sheila‘s Day, written by Duma Ndlovu and co-created with Mbongeni Ngema with additional material by Ebony Jo-Ann, A strong vocal ensemble sings, drums, dances and tells the stories of "Sheilas," domestic workers in the US South and in South Africa during the 1960s, This play about their struggles during the turbulent civil rights activitie sat the time opens the season for Hartford Stage at Kingswood Oxford, where the theater has moved until renovations at the Hartford location are finished this fall. The cast features Ruby Lee (Ann Duquesnay) and Qedusizi (Thuli Dumakude). Ruby Lee comically finds herself at key Civil Rights events in the South while Qedusizi is jailed, then works illegally for a white woman she hopes will help her. Their story explores not only the positive side of the quest for civil rights in both countries, but how some blacks didn’t always embrace the movements.

Director Ricardo Khan breaks the fourth wall by having the women enter the house from time to time and interact with the audience. This production, presented in collaboration with Crossroads Theatre Company and the CT Theater Festival, is a stirring tribute to perseverance, determination and the sisterhood of women. Other cast members: : Natalie Venetia Belcon (Annelen), Carla Brothers (Carla), Ashley Bryant (Stephanie), Erin Cherry (Valerie), Thuli Dumakude (Qedusiz), Anna Duquesne (Ruby Lee), Chantal Jean-Pierre (Torres), Taifa Harris (Breedlove), Julia Lema (Irene), Tu Nokwe (Tu). Running time is 90 minutes without intermission and performances (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday) at 7:30 and weekends (Friday and Saturday) at 8., Sundays and selected Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2 pm cntinue through August 15th.


Paul Perroni will star in Rob Becker’s Defending the Caveman, running Aug.11-22 on Long Wharf Theatre’s Mainstage. Tickets are $32 and are available by calling 203-787-4282 or visiting www.longwharf.org. Performances are Wednesday through Sunday at 8 pm, Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm.
I Do! I Do!, starring Tony Award nominee Kate Baldwin and Drama Desk Award nominee Lewis Cleale, runs Aug.10 – 28 at the Westport Country Playhouse. Written by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, composers of “The Fantasticks, the endearing story spanning 50 years in the marriage of Agnes and Michael will be directed by Susan H. Schulman and choreographed by Michael Lichtefeld, Single tickets range from $40 to $60; opening night tickets, including post-performance reception, are $65. Finian’s Rainbow, directed by Julia Kiley with musical direction by John DeNicola Aug. 11-Sept. 5. Performance times are Wednesday and Sunday matinees at 2 pm. Evening performances are Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30, Friday and Saturday at 8. Tickets are $38 for adults, $33 for seniors, $20 for students and $15 for children and are available by calling the Playhouse box office at 860-767-7318 or by visiting www.ivorytonplayhouse.org. The Playhouse is located at 103 Main Street in Ivoryton.

The magical and heart-warming tale of a naďve young woman who eagerly joins a traveling circus comes to life in Carnival!, directed by Darko Tresnjak, through Sept 18 at the Goodspeed Opera House. Based on the film Lili and with songs like “Love Makes the World Go Round” and "Her Face," Carnival! features music and lyrics by Bob Merrill, and a book by Michael Stewart,  based on material by Helen Deutsch with revisions by Francine Pascal. Lili will be played by Lauren Worsham. Paul will be played by Adam Monley. Curtain times are Wednesday at 2 pm and 7:30 pm, Thursday at 7:30 pm (with select performances at 2 pm), Friday at 8pm, Saturday at 3 and 8pm, and Sunday at 2 pm. (with select performances at 6:30 pm). Tickets are available through the Box Office (860.873.8668), open seven days a week, or on-line at www.goodspeed.org.

Kathleen Turner, Michael Berresse and Evan Jonigkeit star in the world premiere of Matthew Lombardo's new play, High extended through Aug. 22 at TheaterWorks, Hartford. Rob Ruggiero directs.Performances are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, some Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30 pm. Hartford Stage presents its first show of the new season, >i>Sheila’s Day, a celebration of the spirit of domestic works in the US and in South Africa during the turbulent 1960s. Written by Duma Ndlovu, Co-Created by Mbongeni Ngema (with additional material by Ebony Jo-Ann), the dramatic presentation is directed by Ricardo Khan with stirring music and Zulu chants and runs through Aug. 15. >i>Sheila’s Day, was originally commissioned and produced at the Crossroads Theatre Company in New Brunswick, NJ.  The Hartford Stage run of Sheila’s Day is produced in collaboration with the Connecticut Theater Festival at the Roberts Theater at Kingswod Oxford, while renovations are completed on the Hartford Stage theater. Tickets for Sheila’s Day are $23 to $66. Evening performances are weeknights (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday) at 7:30 p.m. and weekends (Friday and Saturday) at 8:00 p.m.  Matinee performances are Sundays and selected Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:00 p.m.  For a more specific schedule, call the Hartford Stage box office at 860-527-5151 or visit hartfordstage.org.
