Jacobs Pillow — Summer 2012
I lucked out with my one available date to visit the Pillow. It coincided with Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet's first appearance there since 1964. The company's reputation as one of the world's most accomplished, diverse and exciting ballet companies was amply confirmed by a program displaying three distinctive styles of dancing, all demonstrating incredible toe work and movement agility.
It began with choreographer Peter Quanz's propulsive In Tandem for six dancers set to composer Steve Reich' Pulitzer Prize winnint Double Sextet. This was followed by a shorter, quieter romantic duet set to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. The program concluded with a thrilling rendition of Carl Off's opera Carmina Burana which featured the entire company. I don't use the adjective thrilling lightly, but it fit this enthralling combination of opera and dance.
Her's hoping that Ella Baff, the Pillow's dynamic artistic director can persuade these breathtaking dancers to come back soon. An interesing aside: all the major Berkshire entertainment organizations are run by women!. In the meantime, there are two more programs scheduled for the Ted Shawn Theater: The Trey McIntyre Project to be followed by Campagnie Kafig. For full details on what's happening at this magical haven for dancers and their fans, add www.jacobspillow.org to your Favorits List.
Below some pictures to give you an idea of the rustic flavor Jacob's Pillow has retained even though it's become a major tourist attraction . .
