Lilly Awards This is a newcomer to the awards organizations founded in 2010 to recognize and honor women in the theater. Named after one of the contemporary theater's best known dramatists, Lillian Hellman. The founders of the organization include playwright Marsha Norman, Theresa Rebeck, and Playwrights Horizon artistic director Tim Sanford. This year 9 Lilly awards were presente to the following: Actresses Cristin Milioti and Nina Arianda Directors Diane Paulus and Sarah Benson Playwrights Katori Hall and Leslye Headland Set designer Heidi Ettinger Actress Estelle Parsons and playwright Tina Howe each received a lifetime achievement Lily. The play many thought was going to be the 2012 Pulitzer Winner, Other Desert Cities by Jon Robin Baitz which moved from Off-Broadway to a still running Broadway production, is one of two runner ups. The winner is Water by the Spoonful, by Quiara Alegría Hudes, about the search for meaning by a returning Iraq war veteran working in a sandwich shop in his hometown of Philadelphia. To read a review posted during last fall's Hartford Stage premiere go here. Hughes was a runnerup for the price once before for her 2007 drama Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue. She also wrote the 2008 Tony Award winning musical In the Heights.The second nominated finalist besides the wonderful Other Desert Cities, was Stephen Karam terrific Sons of the Prophet.
